AUGMENTED THRESHOLD is a visual installation that focuses on cultural heritage awareness within the context of the Istanbul Land Walls, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The audience can control the aesthetics of a projection mapping surface through movement. The interactive installation was exhibited as a mock-up at the AI-driven Speculative Interactions: Towards the Wall Workshop as part of ITU's first Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Project (BIP) titled a[TRH] Augmented Thresholds “Sustaining Architectural Heritage of Istanbul Land Walls.

AI-driven Speculative Interactions: Towards the Wall workshop concentrated on the cultural heritage experiences via the use of machine learning-based models and their integration to interactive design generation methods.

The main question of the workshop was:

How can AI inform interaction and which kind of data can be used during this process?

was the initiator of this exploration process. We shared the whole design process methodology with the workshop students and generated new means of narrating the architectural heritage through interaction.

THE MOCK-UP

*a[TRH] Augmented Thresholds “Sustaining Architectural Heritage of Istanbul Land Walls is an Erasmus+ Blended Intensive Project,  aims to develop an interdisciplinary approach for the protection of the Istanbul Land walls and their transfer to a sustainable future. The project involved online sessions (March-June 2025, 8 hours) and physical workshop  (19-27 July 2025, 72 hours). The events which are organized by Istanbul Technical University, was held with the participation of academicians and undergraduate/graduate students from six different universities, including the University of Granada (Spain), University of Porto (Portugal), University of Applied Sciences Nysa (Poland), University of Politechnico (Spain) and Politecnico di Milano (Italy).
